Takk for tilbakemeldinger

Svein Lie:

Malcolm Langford:

You and others can still use the adress humanrights.uio.no. We also redirected some of the most important pages, after conferring with the webeditors at JUS. But we should definitely have done more to get Google to reindex the new web pages as fast as possible. We will focus on this as of now. Fortunately, uio.no is a large web site, and the reindex will take less time than for most other web sites. Today the new staff page for Nils A Butenschøn comes up as the 10th hit.

I number among the Website and its Discontents. Overnight, the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, part of the Fauclty of Law, lost its global face. Our homepage address was changed together with the addresses for the surviving pages. Thus, links to our website which have been made by numerous institutions around the world over the last decade were suddely broken. I have received complaints from different countries and it is serious for our Centre since more than half of our work is international and it effectively removes our research, activity, staff and conference organisation from the global eye.

Moreover, the IT-Department has failed to understand the basics of Google. Google ranking is partly or largely based on the number of external links made to one's website. Businesses pay lots of money to inflate this in order to improve their ranking. The University of Oslo has instead shot itself in the foot by rendering thousands of links useless. To give you one example: if I enter the name of my Centre Director in Google, the most universal way of checking the profile or background of a person, his University staff page comes up as the third hit. But it is the old page and is broken. The new web page for him is buried somewhere between the 300th and 4450th hits (I gave up looking).

While I am here, a comment on the web design. The new pilot design for the Faculty of Law is a dog's breakfast of wildly different font sizes and structured sections together with a poor use of colours. Whoever designed this monster should be asked to go and study the websites of Oxford, Berkley and Harvard which are well-ordered and consistent, user-friendly, relatively warm with appropriate colours and radiate a distinctive identity. Instead, we have a bad imitation of Google (also see the University main page) served up as grey soup. The Rektor wants to lead the University of Oslo into the top 50-100 Universities in the world. The least we could have is a website that looks like we deserve to be amongst them.

Svein Lie
